What is a mother tincture?
Mother tinctures (tinctura materna) are concentrated, liquid preparations that are obtained either by mixing a plant’s pressed juice with ethanol or by extracting plant raw materials. They are usually made from the fresh plant, but nowadays dried plants and parts of herbs are often used as the basis for further processing, which limits the possible effects, efficacy and variety of nutrients. Alcohol or glycerine of varying concentrations is used as the extraction agent, and cold extraction, heat treatment, infusion, decoction or fermentation are generally used.
