Gemmotherapy: nutrient diversity and vital energy from the bud

Awakening new life with the exceptional power of buds

Gemmotherapy is a special form of herbal medicine. It utilises the highly concentrated nutrient density and concentrated vitality of the buds and young shoots to promote our health in all areas.

In contrast to fully developed plants, which have already developed a variety of protective mechanisms against predators, the buds contain all the important nutrients in the highest concentration to enable new life and growth. This is because they need them for the rapid and complete development of their leaves or fruit. All buds are rich in concentrated active ingredients such as phytohormones, secondary plant substances, vital substances, enzymes, minerals, trace elements, amino acids, vitamins and essential oils. And we can utilise their elemental power because they strengthen all bodily functions, self-healing powers, cell regeneration and offer a nutrient density that can hardly be found anywhere else. The buds are, so to speak, the embryonic tissue from which all other parts of the plant develop.

Important ingredients in fresh buds

  • Flavonoids:
Responsible for the colouring of many types of fruit and vegetables (e.g. apples, cherries, onions, soya, black and green tea) with numerous health-promoting effects. They protect against harmful environmental influences and help with gastrointestinal complaints
  • Meristem:
Plant tissue similar to stem cells which, in contrast to parenchyma (permanent tissue), is still capable of ongoing mitotic divisions. It is particularly involved in growth through increased cell division and exhibits increased protein formation
  • Tannins:
Act as natural defences in plants against microbial pathogens and pests. They have an astringent, drying, haemostatic, anti-inflammatory and soothing effect.
  • And much more besides: Vitamins, saponins, minerals, amino acids, enzymes, trace elements and ultra-trace elements, resins, essential oils, proteins, carbohydrates, chlorophyll, plant hormones …

Nature Sense: The secret of life

In order to bring forth new life, the buds contain the most valuable ingredients in great variety and the highest concentration. The information contained in them is very pure, unadulterated and has the entire natural spectrum necessary for optimal growth processes. Gemmotherapy (gemma = lat. bud) in combination with mother tinctures made exclusively from fresh plant parts from Nature Sense makes this elemental power of plants available to us as a healing and regenerative force: all Nature Sense complex remedies are made exclusively from fresh plant parts (mother tinctures) and plant buds (gemmo). We refrain from producing mother tinctures from dried plant parts, as the variety of nutrients and vital energy is many times greater when freshly harvested plant parts are used.

History of gemmotherapy

The Belgian physician Dr Pol Henry (1918-1988) is considered the inventor of gemmotherapy. During his studies in naturopathy, he was already fascinated by herbal medicine and in particular by the possibilities that young buds offered him. He continued to develop the more specific form of herbal medicine he had discovered and so gemmotherapy became a healing method in which healing preparations from the freshest and therefore most living parts of trees and plants are used, i.e. buds, young shoots, sprouts, shoots and root tips. These contain most of the life forces that also support the human self-healing powers. They also strengthen our regenerative and vitalising powers. In comparison, phytotherapy uses almost exclusively fully-grown flowers, fruits and other plant parts.

Harvesting the buds

Nature Sense only uses fresh plant parts, herbs or buds in organic quality. This is because all the active ingredients of later developed leaves, flowers, fruits, bark and roots are contained in the buds in a highly concentrated form. It is therefore particularly important that they are harvested at the optimum time: the buds should no longer be fully closed, as this means they are too young. They should also not be too wide open, i.e. the leaves should not be sticking out, as this would be too late. The ideal harvest time is when a small green tip appears: just before the bud opens properly, it is full of vigour – the energy and dynamism before it unfolds and opens completely.

These principles are strictly adhered to in the production of Nature Sense‘s complex remedies. Because a sustainable harvest pays off. In order not to disturb the natural balance, two out of three buds are left on the plant and only one is harvested. In total, never harvest more than ten per cent of all buds so as not to endanger the next harvest. After harvesting, the buds are immediately placed in the solvent to extract and preserve the ingredients.

Processing the buds

The bud extracts (macerates) are produced using the maceration process. This method dissolves volatile ingredients from plant-based raw materials. For this purpose, the chopped plant parts are doused with a water-glycerine-alcohol solution. This extract must be stored at room temperature for four weeks to three months and moved regularly. Nature Sense only uses violet glass bottles in order to preserve the valuable ingredients and plant energies in the best possible way. The shelf life is at least three years.

Nature Sense‘s complex remedies contain various mother tinctures and bud extracts that have been specially selected according to themes and indications. In addition, all Nature Sense products are activated and energised using UMH technology in order to exploit their full potential on both a material and energetic level. Instead of focussing on individual substances, Nature Sense focuses on the diversity of thousands of ingredients and bioactive substances contained in each plant. All ingredients are organic and harvested by hand. Nature Sense is available in the Trimedea shop.
