Skin in Detail: Conflicts and Conflict Themes of the Sebaceous Glands

Despite elaborate care, the skin remains dry for many people. Behind this is a biological program of the sebaceous glands. Sounds paradoxical? This is pure BIOlogy!

The sebaceous glands produce more secretion in their conflict-active phase to better moisturize the hair and skin. The biological conflict is „that the skin, or the fur, dries out“. In the repair phase (conflict-resolved phase) there is temporarily less secretion, a hypofunction of the sebaceous glands = less sebum production! The biologically meaningful programs of the epidermis / outer skin are treated and described in a separate article!

External influences such as biologically perceived conflicts, cosmetic treatments or cosmetics that „dry out the skin“ stimulate sebum production

This conflict can also be activated by:

• „artificial“ exposure to excessive sunlight

• Laser light

• IPL (Intense Pulse Light, procedure for hair removal)

• Radiofrequency therapy

• Ultrasound

• Electrical treatments

• Plasma treatments

• Chemical substances such as peels, acid and enzyme peels or

• Mechanical stimuli such as microdermabrasion, needling etc.

A deliberate stimulus (treatment) takes place with subsequent repair mechanisms. Whenever our body perceives a „danger of skin drying out“, it reacts by activating a special program „sebaceous gland hyperfunction“. The skin initially reacts with increased sebum formation to protect skin and hair from drying out. In the second phase of conflict resolution, there is reduced secretion and sebum production. The skin feels dry until the repair processes are completed.

Our personal view, belief or manufacturer information on whether this or that treatment dries out the skin and hair plays a subordinate role. Because the body reacts intelligently and bio-logically sensibly. Our body has enough sensitive sensors to analyze and evaluate the current actual situation and, if necessary, intervene in a controlling manner (regulation).

When products are used in the cosmetic sector that feel good on the surface and are also good for the skin, the question nevertheless arises as to what happens in the underlying skin layers with regard to moisture supply.

Does glycerin pretend moisture to the skin surface while the skin dries out in deeper layers?

Glycerin reaches the skin surface in the form of various products. It can bind a lot of water and moisture. Could it be that water and moisture are being “sucked out” from the underlying skin areas? If that were the case, the skin would “dry out” despite sufficient surface moisture (to put it exaggeratedly) and start the emergency program of the sebaceous glands (increased sebum production).

The skin repeatedly receives the feedback: “too dry – produce more sebum”. This could lead to a cycle: overfunction of the sebaceous glands = increased sebum production. The next question would then be: Can the increased amount of sebum formed escape or is escape prevented due to “clogging” of the ducts (make-up, care products…)?

In skin conditions where there is overproduction of sebum or enlarged sebaceous glands (cell proliferation / swelling processes with signs of inflammation), could the cause then lie in the fact that cosmetics on the skin surface permanently “suck out” the water and moisture from the underlying layers?

With these suggestions and thoughts, we only want to provide indications. For specific skin conditions that do not improve despite elaborate care, this could be another attempt or starting point.

None of these tissues (dermis, corium, sweat glands and sebaceous glands) can feel pain. If it hurts, it is only because the overlying ectodermal layer (epidermis) is tense or otherwise damaged or destroyed.
