Strophanthin: The Forgotten Heart Remedy

Benefits, application and background of the active substance strophanthin
Strophanthin was long considered the remedy of choice for heart failure. Since the eighties it has almost completely fallen into oblivion. Unjustly so, because its effect is still remarkable today.
The active substance from the seeds of the African twining plant Strophanthus was first discovered in 1859 by the Scottish botanist Sir John Kirk. At that time used as arrow poison, a small amount dripped onto his toothbrush – and relieved his heart complaints. This observation led to further investigations and finally to the introduction of strophanthin into human medicine.
From the 19th century, then still under the term “Tinctura Strophanthi”, until the early 20th century, strophanthin was used as a highly effective heart remedy in Germany and other countries. In 1904 Prof. Alfred Fraenkel developed the intravenous treatment, which led to a triumphant advance of the active substance in German clinics.
However, due to the influence of US-American pharmaceutical companies and physicians, strophanthin lost importance in the 1950s. They preferred digitalis, an active substance from the foxglove plant. Despite this rejection, it remained in use in some circles of medicine and among specialized physicians.
Effects of strophanthin
Strophanthin is considered one of the most effective heart remedies. Its main effect consists in the
• Support of heart function by improving lactic acid oxidation in the heart muscle
• Raising of the pH value
• Prevention of potassium loss
• Increase of the heart’s performance capacity
• Prevention of heart necrosis and improvement of blood circulation
• For the prevention and treatment of heart attack and angina pectoris
In addition, strophanthin has a regulating effect on the autonomic nervous system, which can be helpful in stress-related conditions such as high blood pressure, heart failure and depression. It is also used in older people to improve cerebral blood flow and to combat age-related weakness.
Experiences with strophanthin
Many physicians and patients have had positive experiences with strophanthin. Reports from physicians such as Dr. Berthold Kern and Dr. Wieland Debusmann show that regular use of strophanthin can prevent heart attacks.
Patients report a clear improvement in their well-being, fewer angina pectoris attacks and a general increase in their quality of life after taking strophanthin. However, there are also challenges, as official medicine often disputes the effect and strophanthin is difficult to obtain because it is prescription-only and produced by only a few pharmacies.
